Matthew Silver shines in new moving AWKWARD i video for ‘Milkshakes Funnelcakes’

AWKWARD i, the alter ego of Dutch musician Djurre de Haan, recently released the music video for Milkshakes Funnelcakes. The video features New York-based street performer Matthew Silver, the hero of a touching and witty spiritual odyssey across the bustling inner city. The video was directed by De Haan’s frequent collaborator, filmmaker Michiel Ten Horn

Ten Horn used AWKWARD i’s music for his films in the past, notably Ten Horn’s debut picture De Ontmaagding van Eva van End. Ten Horn also enlisted De Haan to score Aanmodderfakker. Both pictures granted De Haan two Gouden Kalf-nominations. It was only a matter of time when Ten Horn used his talents to compliment AWKWARD i, instead of just the other way around. When Ten Horn found himself in New York, things clicked into place. “I envisioned a certain sentiment to the song and the right protagonist to portray it. Then I stumbled upon Matthew (Silver) on a plaza, dressed in bathing suit and accompanied by a unicorn and a rubber chicken.”

Matthew Silver is a hard person to miss when you’re strolling around Union Square. His frolicking ways have earned him widespread notoriety in the US and beyond. Silver’s co-star in the Milkshakes Funnelcakes-video is David Neal Levin.

Milkshakes Funnelcakes is the opening cut of KYD, and, not unlike the captivating mini-roadmovie Ten Horn directed, a microcosm of a larger narrative. Starting with a downward spiral at a daughter’s first birthday party, the song claws its way upwards, ascending into this rousing existential crusade, unabashed of its magnanimous objective. KYD is slated for release on Excelsior Recordings February 2018.

This Fall, AWKWARD i is set to tour The Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and Austria. After the album release, you can catch De Haan with band in the clubs
